FAQs
What is hypnosis?
It may surprise you to know that hypnosis is a natural state of altered awareness. We are all moving in and out of states of hypnosis during the day. When waking up and when falling asleep, watching television and driving are some of the most common periods when hypnosis occurs. What will it feel like?
Because hypnosis is a natural state it does not feel strange or other-worldly. This is a common misconception usually due to watching stage hypnosis where it is sold as a strange power. Often, people have difficulty differentiating between a state of hypnosis and usual awareness. Will I loose control or be under the control of the hypnotherapist?
It is certain you have already experienced hypnosis. It is not a loss of control or a state were you become completely under the control of another. Often somebody experiencing hypnosis becomes hyper-aware with their senses heightened. They are completely aware of what the hypnotherapist is saying and are able to end the trance state of hypnosis at their decision. A common time to enter a state of hypnosis is when watching a film. The mind is concentrated and focused upon a tiny box filled with pictures and sounds - so much so we act as though they are real! And just like watching a film you control whether you turn it off or whether you engage with it. What you experience is real, but you are in control at all times. Is it dangerous? Because it is a natural state it is no more dangerous than any other natural state such as sleeping and full conscious awareness. How long will it take? Each session lasts about an hour. The treatment length will depend upon the reason for treatment and the individual. Since everybody is different this can and will vary. However, at the initial consultation I will always give the expected number of sessions for treatment. Rough guidelines are available in the conditions section. Are there any side effects?
Feeling relaxed, well rested and in tune with yourself - the side effects are all good! |
Is it like stage hypnosis?
No. Stage hypnosis is very different, although it is often most people's first contact with hypnosis. You may have seen it on television or a live show. The thing to remember is that audience members have been selected and only those who naturally go into deep hypnosis will be used. Since they are volunteers they are also ready to make fools of themselves or to entertain. Often very direct and disorientating suggestions are made to the volunteers aimed at bringing about entertaining situations. Hypnotherapy uses very different techniques that are much less intrusive and aimed at bringing about long-lasting and comforting changes. I want to empower clients to improve their own lives, not to entertain! Will I get stuck in Hypnosis? As previously mentioned somebody in hypnosis is in full control and can leave that state whenever they choose. If the therapist decided to stop therapy and leave the room the client would either move into sleep, or to a fully awake state Will I give secrets away? Just as you are able to leave the state of hypnosis at the time of your choosing you are in full control of what you say and do during that time. You will only do and say what you want. You may experience emotions that are difficult but only if you choose to do so. Will it work for me? Because each of us is an individual the treatment and methods will be different too. The whole point of the initial consultation is to establish a length and course of treatment. Once the consultation complete we can move forward together to therapy. There are no guarantees but with two of us working together there should be reason to see improvement. |
